 KAPONO Sept 09, 2009
Hey Everybody,
thank you so much to all of you for your overwhelming
response to this years concerts at the Hawaii Theatre. Last year was a
blast and everybody had a great time, but this years response was
even more amazing. I have to agree it was a fantastic show. I know we
put on our best as we always do and it felt really good. I watched
the Legends all three nights and they were "on the money". They were
so honored and so happy to be a part of our show and they showed it.
I enjoyed every minute and hope you folks did too. I know people
weren't expecting it, but I know they were blown away. I could feel
the love and respect in the audience and it was a beautiful thing.
Cee and I just wanted to pay our respects to these icon that ruled
Waikiki in their day and it was great to turn people on to them. They
will never be forgotten!
We started off with our dear brother Kimo Kahoano. He played a big
part in the show because he was there back in the day when the Legends
were at their moment. Kimo laid it all down like no one else can.
He's smooth and very enthusiastic and people were mesmerized. He is
the best.
Jimmy Borges was flawless and took command of his performance like a
real pro. Iva Kinikama was nervous the first night, but he pulled it all
together the last two nights and kicked ass. He was having fun.
Buddy and Sammi Fo were a little more laid back, but after living in
Ka'u on the Big Island for years now, who wouldn't be. It was a
culture shock for both of them and I can understand the change. They
were terrific and they were so honored to be there that they played an
extra song for everybody. As Buddy puts it, "we're gonna break the
rules." Once a beachboy always a beachboy. Melveen Leed, well, she's
always on. She's a master at entertaining. Her voice is better than
it's ever been and she still connects with the audience like they're
her best friends. The last night Melveen had a previous engagement
and we certainly missed her, but Gabe filled her spot like an elephant
sitting on a rose. At 79 he blew (saxophone) like he was 17. It blew
me away how he has mastered his instrument and how true he is to his
music. The song "Europa" was the best I've ever heard. Amazing!
Amazing! Amazing! We thank them for being a part of our show and
especially our lives. You guys "ROCK!"
Cee & I had our work cut out for us and we knew we had to be the best
we could be and we gave it our all. We were feeling the love and our
Friends & Fans were feeling it from us as well. It was magical. The
sound in the Theatre was C&K friendly and even Cee and I were
mesmerized by the sound we were putting out. We could feel every note
that came out of us. Of course we had our favorite sound man, Joe
Arias, making sure everybody heard it the way it should be heard. We
had a ball.
We had a few of surprises, the first being Pauline Wilson. She is a
little girl with a big voice and she did "Feeling Just The Way I Do,"
like I've never heard before. I love her. She performed with a
group, back in the day, called "Aux" later known as "Seawind." What a
group of talented musicians. They had a nine piece band and she sang
with power and feel that took the band to another level. They have a
new release coming out soon. Please check it out. You won't be
discouraged.
Next, and also someone who has a new release out that you should add
to your collection, we had none other than Grammy nominee, multi-HOKU
award winner Amy Hanaiali'i. Amy is untouchable when it comes to style and grace. We all know her, we all
Love her and we all enjoy her work. She sang "Here With You," and it was so smooth and easy as only she can do. Thank you to our sisters
Amy and Pauline.
Well, that wasn't it for surprises. No not by a long shot. We
introduced a new song from a our new CD, "C&K", a song called, "Smooth
Sailin'. A free download that's been going crazy Worldwide. I'm
sure everybody has the new CD by now and I hope you're enjoying every
bit of it. We're very proud of it and after twenty years it better be
good. O.K. so we introduce a new song and the first thing you hear is
strings and as we start the song the back curtain opens and low and
behold the most beautiful thing appears and that's the Kamehameha High
School Symphonetta under the direction of Dr. Robert Hamilton. Ten
musical student that gave their all to their love for music and their
love for being a part of our show. This is one big reason we should
all support music in the schools (my personal feelings). Cee and I
totally appreciated their talent and their commitment to being with
us. It was amazing! They played with us for the last five songs and
everyone who was there couldn't believe it could get any better. Oh
we love that.
All in all we were so happy with how smooth everything
went and how every performer gave the best they could give. The
audience certainly showed their love and we all certainly gave it.
Two Hana Hou's ending with Cee and I and the strings on "All In Love
Is Fair. It was chicken skin and a great way to close the night.
Well, that's the part that everyone sees and loves, but it would'nt have happened without a lot of people behind the scenes.
Our "Dream Team" - my wife and our manager Lezlee Ka'aihue, our Operations Manager, Kimi Taniyama, Our Digital Media Giants,
